Pencil and Charcoal

When I sit down to draw a portrait, especially if I want to really capture the feel of someone, I often reach for charcoal, the way it crumbles and smudges – that allows me to be incredibly expressive. It's in those harsh contrasts, I think, that the true personality of the person starts to emerge. It's like the charcoal itself helps me to dig beneath the surface and reveal something more than just their features; it's about capturing their energy, their intensity, or maybe even a hint of their inner world right there on the page.
